An interesting little snippet in a book called 'In and Around Thorpe Hesley and Wentworth':
Thorpe Hesley has long been noted for its musical events. The Whit Sing was eagerly awaited every year and there were many concerts and chapel anniversaries. There is even a record of a singing contest in 1911 at which 'John Ed Portman won first prize, Frank Matthews second prize and Harry Kingston third prize'. There is still a flourishing village choir and a village band. |
